Whether they are on a phone or a computer, sharing information on Facebook or pictures on Snapchat, kids are using social media to share information with their friends and family. It all seems like good fun, but is there more going on behind the scenes?

Shared Hope Ambassador Susi Maiyer has made it her mission to enlighten parents and children on the concerns of posting pictures and communicating with strangers on social media. Mrs. Maiyer travels throughout North Central Ohio to discuss the real dangers of human trafficking and how it’s connected to internet use.

The Women’s Fund of The Shelby Foundation is determined to keep children safe. Understanding the importance of her message the Women’s Fund made the decision to bring her into the schools. Mrs. Maiyer will spread awareness of the dangers of the internet and how it relates to human trafficking, and how this thriving industry affects families from all different demographics.

“Technology is not going away. If anything, this is just the beginning. It’s important for us to embrace technology but also be cautious of how it can compromise safety,” said Carrie Kemerer, director of The Shelby Foundation.

On Wednesday, September 19th, Mrs. Maiyer will provide a 90 minute presentation to Shelby Middle School in the morning, and a second presentation to high school students in the afternoon. In the evening, Mrs. Maiyer will be on site to talk with parents during the parent/teacher conferences.

Mrs. Kemerer said, “I hope students and parents really listen to Mrs. Maiyer’s message. We’re not trying to scare anyone but human trafficking is a reality everywhere not just in large cities.”
