The Shelby Foundation Board of Directors approved $30,000 in community grants to local nonprofit organizations at the April 17, 2018 meeting. Not all grants are listed because some donors wished to remain anonymous.

Bibs & Boots 4-H Club received a $250 grant to purchase materials for club project, “My Very Own Blanket.” Club members will make fleece blankets for children living in foster care throughout Shelby, Richland County, and Ohio. This grant was funded by the Shelby 4-H Fund of The Shelby Foundation.

First Lutheran Church Food Pantry received a $2,000 grant to purchase food and offset delivery fees from the Cleveland Food Bank. The grant will allow for a wider variety of protein and bulk quantities to be purchased. The goal is to provide needy families with the widest range of nutritious foods possible. This grant was funded by the Reynolds Family Memorial Fund of The Shelby Foundation.

Freedom Wranglers 4-H Club received a $1,200 grant to purchase learning lab kits to help educate club members on how to properly care for a variety of animals. This grant was funded by the Shelby 4-H Fund of The Shelby Foundation.

North Central State College Foundation received a $10,000 grant for the Tuition Freedom Scholarship (TFS) program. Shelby students who attended and received college credits while still in high school and earned at least a 2.5 GPA are eligible to become Tuition Freedom Scholars at North Central State College in the fall following their high school graduation. Tuition Freedom will provide up to an associate degree or a maximum of 64 credit hours of courses as long as students enroll full time. This grant was funded by the Reynolds Family Memorial Fund of The Shelby Foundation.

North Central State College Foundation received a $500 grant for the Women Leadership Development program. The program will professionally develop women who have a goal to reach beyond themselves and to contribute substantially to the quality of the community, preparing them to serve in a future leadership role. This grant was funded by the Women’s Fund of The Shelby Foundation.

Raemelton Therapeutic Equestrian Center received a $3,900 grant for Auburn & Dowds Elementary Therapeutic Riding Scholarships. This grant will provide children with disabilities the opportunity to participate in therapeutic horseback riding programs. Therapeutic riding uses the process of learning to ride and the movements of the horse to strengthen primary body control and sequencing.

Shelby Middle School received a $5,000 grant for the Eighth Grade Class Trip to Washington D.C. The goal is to provide students with the chance to visit our nation’s capital, and, in turn, have the opportunity to gain an entirely different perspective on history, science, math, literature, music, and the arts. In essence, this trip will be like stepping into a history book, but our students will be a part of the text and they will experience education from an unparalleled perspective.

Shelby Middle School received a $3,500 grant for the annual 6th Grade Camp Nuhop trip. The Camp Nuhop program focuses on academic and interpersonal skills in an outdoor classroom, where students learn from their natural environment. The experiences students receive are focused on realistic, problem solving situations.

Shelby St. Mary’s School received a $1,775 grant for the 5th & 6th Grade class trip to develop a stronger sense of leadership & community at an outdoor school over a three-day period. The “Outdoor School at Damascus” is a hands-on, total immersion learning campus serving middle school students. The Great Outdoors program makes science; environmental education; leadership development; teamwork; and related curriculum come alive, and become significantly more relevant for every student.

The Shelby Foundation is a nonprofit organization that gives back to Shelby’s community and surrounding areas by providing donors an opportunity to positively impact Shelby’s future. It makes it as easy as possible for people to use their money to help this community.

The Foundation awards grant dollars to worthy nonprofit organizations and their programs that improve the lives of Shelby residents. The Foundation is dedicated to programs which enhance arts, culture and humanities, improve health, and welfare services.
