The Shelby Foundation’s Women’s Fund hosted its first lecture of the year with disability advocate, entrepreneur, and motivational speaker Heidi McKenzie as the presenter on April 28, 2025.

McKenzie became a T4 paraplegic after a traumatic car accident at the age of 21. Since then, she has dedicated her life to breaking down social barriers for people with disabilities — whether through public speaking, advocacy, or fashion. As the founder of Alter UR Ego, a clothing line for people in wheelchairs, she designed a pair of jeans for people in wheelchairs that are both fashionable and functional.

McKenzie believes in the power of self-expression and accessibility.

“I’ve always kept a positive attitude in regard to my injury, and I take advantage of opportunities to experience life as a paraplegic,” McKenzie said. “I wanted to make it possible for those with disabilities to express their ‘alter-ego’ through fashion while breaking down social barriers.”

A graduate of Morehead State University with a degree in Small Business Management, McKenzie was crowned Ms. Wheelchair Kentucky in 2012 and went on to compete nationally. She now serves on the board of Ms. Wheelchair Ohio and works at SpinLife, helping others find the mobility tools they need to live fully.

Lois Robertson, Foundation executive assistant and Women’s Fund steering committee member, shared her enthusiasm for Monday evening’s turnout. “There were 85 women present to listen to Heidi’s inspirational journey. She is an incredibly brave lady, and we were delighted she was able to share her story with us.”

The next lecture is slated for Monday, July 28, and will focus on heart health. For more information about the Women’s Fund of The Shelby Foundation visit www.theshelbyfoundation.org
