In September, the Shelby community lost a beloved teacher, coach, and role model. Understanding the depth of his impact, the Zuercher Family made the decision to keep Terry’s legacy alive by establishing a scholarship in his memory.

Terry spent his entire teaching career at Shelby City Schools. He was invested in the youth, not just educating their minds, but also providing guidance by encouraging them to better themselves and their community. Spending over 57 seasons as a coach, he instilled self-discipline and the importance of character in the countless youths he guided. For that reason, it was a natural fit for his family to establish a scholarship benefiting Shelby Seniors that he spent his entire career fostering.

Director Carrie Kemerer said, “It’s an honor to have such highly respected family collaborate with The Shelby Foundation. Ensuring his memory will be remembered in perpetuity, the Zuercher Family established an annual scholarship in his name. The first scholarship will be awarded in 2021 to a graduating high school senior.”

Coach Zuercher had many interests, but his favorite was running, so the scholarship will be awarded to a student who participated in cross country or track while at Shelby High School.

Kemerer said, “I had Coach Zuercher as a teacher. He had a lasting impact on me. He has had an impact on many students. How fitting that he will impact future students but in a different way.”

Friends and family can donate to the scholarship fund online or by sending a check to 142 North Gamble Street, Suite F, Shelby.
